Dhunjisha Dorabji Mehta studied till the age of 11 in Gujarati before his paternal uncle, Meherwanji, called him away to Calcutta where he received an English education till the 7th standard. He began working with his uncle in 1897 and in 1901, he took charge of the Canton branch.

After his father died, he became a partner in M.N. Mehta and Co. and took charge of the Head Office. Finally in 1926, he began his own firm, Dorabji Mehta and Sons, in Calcutta.
