Seth Edulji Navroji Mehta (Chinai) was born in Malessar area of Navsari in 1826. After working with Sir Jamshedji Jeejeebhoy he went at, an early age of 14-15, to China. The journey in those days took six months. Initially he lived in a warehouse and slowly built up a small business. After 15 years or so, he had sufficiently established himself and began a partnership with, at first, Noshervanji Talati and, on his passing away, the latter's son Sohrabji Talati.

They traded in small goods, bangles, silk, hingra (asafetida), pearls, tea cinnamon, opium, cotton yarn, cotton wool etc. With the money they earned, he supported many poorer relatives. He began his business in Canton and then opened offices in Bombay, Hong Kong, Amoi, Kushou, and Formosa (Taipei).

He introduced his nephew Kawasji Mancherji Mehta (whom he later adopted) into the business, which initially went by the name or D.D. Olia and Company in Amoi and Formosa, before he amicably separated from his partner Seth E.S. Laher to form E.N. Mehta and Co. which existed from 1872 to 1899.

Big at heart, gave to his nephews from his own share. Further he built houses for his brothers, paid for marriages and death ceremonies of his family members, and even for the "Naver" Ceremonies of his priests' children. Despite this, he continued to have a lot of personal wealth.

In 1884-85, he had an agiary built at Bardoli. He also bought a house in Navsari for use by the community on special occasions. This was named Manek Baug after his late mother.

In 1889, on his death, his adopted son Kavasji and nephew Behramji Shapurji took over the company. Ten years later when the exchange rate crashed from 2.25 per $100 to Rs. 115 per $100, the enormous losses forced the company to close.
